Committed to the Arts
WHO WE ARE TODAY
Matchbox Children's Theatre has been staging a variety of artistic performances in Austin since 1975. We believe our artists and performers deserve to have a platform from which they can share their creative and innovative works. Our goal is to provide our audiences an artistic and emotional experience they won’t forget.
MCT sparks imaginations way beyond just our 3 plays a year. With an ever-growing list of classes, camps, and community partnerships we provide many ways throughout the year to engage with the people of Southern Minnesota. Navigating this past year through the pandemic, we have found even more ways to continue bringing the arts to the community. There are plenty of opportunities for you to join us! Check out all our classes and shows below and sign up today.
We enhance the experience for our audiences by providing the chance for them to interact with the actors following the play. We feel this is especially meaningful because it establishes a clear definition between the character and the actor, between pretend and reality. The children can see that the scary witch, terrible troll, or mighty king are only real people. It gives curious play-goers the chance to touch intriguing costumes, see the friendly face under the make-up, and ask questions.
We strongly believe consistency in attending and enjoying MCT will develop an ongoing desire to include live theatre in leisure time activities throughout their lives. Careful consideration goes into the planning of our season so we will offer shows that appeal to a wide age range. Our goal is for the very young children to enjoy the performances as much as the older ones. We encourage families to share Matchbox plays together. Frequently we hear comments that adults enjoy the plays as much as the children, and sometimes even more than they do! Often the introduction, or reintroduction of theatre to adults stimulates them to develop a continuing interest in theatre for themselves.
Whether the children or adults in our audiences choose to watch our plays or to become actively involved in the productions, a key purpose of Matchbox Children's Theatre is to create a positive environment for many people to experience live theatre.
THE MISSION OF MATCHBOX CHILDREN'S THEATRE IS TO SPARK IMAGINATIONS BY PRESENTING PROFESSIONAL QUALITY CHILDREN'S THEATRE ON A CONSISTENT BASIS.
Matchbox Children's Theatre is an independent, nonprofit organization which organizes, encourages, and produces quality theatre for children and families in Austin and surrounding areas. MCT encourages children to grow in their love and expression of live theatre through camps, ongoing classes and study guides provided to teachers of student audiences.
Matchbox Children's Theatre strives to serve the community equally regardless of color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national or ethnic origin, physical or mental disability, in any of its activities or operations.
IN THESE TIMES OF COVID-19...
We believe that theatre programs are more vital than ever, given their ability to support the social and emotional wellbeing of our youth in this time of great challenge. That being said, however, we also uphold the importance of preventative measures. Students and parents are required to wear masks whenever not drinking or eating, and encouraged to frequently sanitize. We provide sanitizer in multiple places near doorways, performance areas, and in classrooms. MCT asks that if your kiddo is not feeling well and experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in contact with anyone testing positive in the past 2 weeks, that they stay home until all clear. We ALL cannot wait for "normal" again, and are so thankful for all of you bearing with us as we steadily approach that bright future together!
